When
Israelis decided to design a flag for their new state, someone pointed out
that the Jews already had a flag, the tallit, which religious Jews wore
everyday when they prayed. The white shawl with black or blue stripes on
both sides would make a perfect flag. It was then decided to add a Magen
David, the Star of David, which had long been a Jewish symbol, and in a
few minutes, the Jews had a flag: a blue and white tallit with a blue
Magen David.
