Herzl
never lived to see Israel become an independent state. He died at a very
young age, after organizing several Zionist Congresses. After the first
Zionist Congress in 1897, he wrote in his diary “In Basle I founded the
Jewish State. In five years perhaps, and certainly in fifty,
everyone will see it.” He was right. In May 1948 the Jewish State was
born. Once Israel became independent, Herzl’s bones were reburied on the
top of a mountain overlooking Jerusalem, the capital of the country he
helped create. Surrounding him are the tombs of many of Israel’s leaders
and of the soldiers who died to keep Israel independent.
