The
afikoman is the very last piece of matza we eat at the seder, to remind us
of the Korban Pesach. By now it is late at night and the children are
beginning to fall asleep. To keep them interested, we have a custom that
the children steal the afikoman from their parents and hide it. They know
that the seder can’t go on without the afikoman, so they offer to give
it back to their parents in exchange for a present that they will get
during Hol HaMo’ed.
