Much later, the Omer became a time of mourning for the 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died during a revolt against Rome. There is still a custom of keeping some of laws of mourning during most of the Omer. Many Jews will not shave or get a haircut then, except during a few special days in the middle of the Omer.
