What is Shavuot?

"And you shall take the first fruits of the earth which shall come from your land. . . and you shall put them in a basket and you will go to the place where God will choose to dwell."

What does it mean to be free? Does it mean that you can do anything you want? Or does it mean that you have extra responsibilities just because you’re free. This is one of the big questions that surround the holiday of Shavuot. Seven weeks ago was Pesach, when we celebrated gaining our freedom from Egypt. With that freedom also came responsibilities, and that means keeping the law and acting in a responsible manner. No people can survive their independence without laws to guide them and help them develop. That’s why we celebrate Shavuot: to remind us that even free people have responsibilities.
