The Land

Sukkot can be a very happy time for farmers. If they had a good year, they have finished gathering all their crops and they can now relax during the long winter. That's why Sukkot is sometimes called Hag Ha'asif, the Harvest Festival. To show how thankful they were for their crops, people would bring some to the Temple in Jerusalem and offer them to God. While they were there, they would also pray for rain. Since there are no big rivers in Israel, rain is the farmers' main source of water. Even today, on Shmini Atzeret, we still say special prayers for rain on behalf of the farmers in Israel.
